NEW DELHI: August 16. A government scared of the Anna Hazare anti-corruption movement, finally got him arrested a after he was detained by Delhi Police at his residence in Mayur Vihar ahead of his indefinite fast, scheduled to begin this morning at J.P.Park of New Delhi..
A passé of senior Delhi Police officers reached Anna Hazare’s residence early in the morning and informed him that he could not leave his home.
His associates Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal too have been arrested.
However, the Delhi police has claimed that Anna and his associates have been taken into a preventive custody and have not been arrested.
According to Associated Press release in The Wall street journal – ‘ Police in India have detained a prominent rights activist who had announced an indefinite hunger strike to demand tougher anti-corruption laws.
Anna Hazare had said that he would start fasting Tuesday despite police denying him permission to fast for more than three days.
Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said Mr. Hazare was detained early Tuesday. He gave no other details.
Mr. Hazare ended a four-day hunger strike in April after the government set up a committee to draft the anti-corruption legislation. The committee included Mr. Hazare and other nonelected activists.
Mr. Hazare has been demanding that the prime minister and the judiciary be included in the purview of the anti-corruption watchdog. The current draft of the law does not include them.
